Well, it’s getting to that time. My car lease expires in March 2007, so I’m out looking for a new vehicle! yay… I love shopping for cars.
Basically the 3 that I’m looking at are:
- Audi A4 2.0T Quattro Avant
- BMW 328XiT
- Volvo V50 T5 AWD
So I’ve test drove all of them. I even went and tested out Subaru – I was not impressed at the lack of features that the Legacy wagon has when it’s priced around $40,000.
Take a look at this website for the Edmunds.com comparison of these 3 cars.
What am I looking for in a car:
- Good gas consumption. I drive a lot (to and from work is all highway driving) and I want something that’s good on gas so that I’m not spending my entire paycheck on gas.
- Great safety. Since I do a lot of highway driving, I want something that’s extremely safe, and rated high.
- All wheel drive. This ties into the safety issue. The all wheel drive makes a huge difference in the winter and in the mid to late fall and early to mid spring. Once you have AWD, it’s hard to get a vehicle without it.
- Xenon headlights. They make a HUGE difference when driving at dawn, dusk, and at night.
- Leather w/ heated seats and a sunroof – I love them. Once you have them, it’s hard to go back.
- Comfort – I spend about 2 hours/day in my car. I want it to be comfortable and worry free.
- Long intermissions between oil changes and tune-ups/maintenance. Because of the driving I do, I don’t want to be at the dealership for maintenance every 1.5 months. At least 12,000km between regular scheduled maintenance is what I’m looking for. That’s about 4 months of driving.
- Wagon/hatchback – I miss the cargo space I had in my SUV.
- Compass – it’s true… I’ll admit it… sometimes I have no idea what direction I’m going in, let alone where I’m going. I have a portable GPS unit (it’s an add-on for my PDA) but I don’t always take it with me.
That’s about it for my wants.
Take a look at the link to the Edmunds car site review of my 3 choices and let me know what you think.

I went to a warehouse sale today, and found a fellows monitor stand that will do what I want! plus it’s height adjustable. It doesn’t look some amazing but hey… it was a whopping $10! (reg. 49.99)
I also bought a bytecc laptop cooling station (to put on top of the stand that I mentioned above) so that it keeps my macbook pro cool – there are 2 fans on the bottom of it that are powered by USB (my 20″ lcd has 2 USB ports on the side so i plugged it into there hehehe)
I also bought a new usb keyboard (looks really nice) it’s a pc keyboard but works just fine on the mac.
I ALSO (yup… more stuff) bought a USB hub that allows you to share 4 devices (or more if you plug another hub into it) with 2 computers. You can select which computer has each device independantly. I decided to remove my mouse from the setup and try to use my tablet fulltime at home. I have a Graphire 4 – so I have a mouse with it too in case I feel like reverting.
So, I’ve removed my primary desktop from the setup, my CRT from the setup, my ATI Remote Wonder from the setup, my KVM and a whole bunch of cables. I think that I’m going to be happy with this setup… I guess we’ll find out over the next week or so as I give this a go.

I’ve decided to upgrade my server w/ my desktop hardware and use my laptop as my primary computer. (my desktop and server an PC-based).
I have a ps/2 kbd, a USB mouse (w/ ps/2 adapter) plugged into a KVM for the 2 pc’s. I have 2 monitors too (20.1″ ws lcd, and a 17″ crt – the crt is the one plugged into the kvm). My KVM is ps/2 not usb.
So… because my primary desktop died, I was thinking that I would upg. my server, and then use my laptop as my primary. Having said that, I want to do dual monitor with it, and use a regular kbd/mou and my tablet (plugged directly into the desktop).
I have to pickup the following:
usb kbd
usb kvm
stand for the laptop/cooling pad
Also, are there any problems with having the laptop on nearly all the time plugged into the wall?
Anyone have thoughts about my setup? what I should or shouldn’t do?

We’re trying to figure out what the GNU acronym stands for. From what I’ve found, it’s GNU’s Not Unix – but that still doesn’t explain what GNU is.
I know that the GNU project is based on the open-source code of conduct, but that’s just the definition.
The best we’ve been able to come up with is “Geeks/Nerds – UNITED!”
What can you come up with?
