I have the touch… on my computer at work I sync with Windows XP running through Parallels on my Leopard (10.5) system.
At home, I sync it with my Leopard 10.5 system using Markspace MissingSync (MMS) software… you can get a 15-day trial of their software or their Beta software (I think the Beta is 30-days). I’m using their latest Beta.
Using Parallels, it will sync with Outlook… no probs… (we have an exchange server at work – so this is how I sync all my meetings and whatnot). I could use MMS at work to sync with Entourage if I wanted to – but I don’t bother.
When I sync with MMS – OMFG…. amazing stuff happens… I can sync with iPhoto, iMovie, iCal (I don’t use this as I use Entourage), and even Mail (again, I don’t use this – I use entourage).
The stuff with page magnification and whatnot… I have a few things to say about that. The version of IE that comes on the touch doesn’t do that. You can set it to landscape or portrait, you can set it to force everything into 1 column, or desktop mode (there’s a 3rd option but those are the 2 that I use). By default, the touch will try to load mobile versions of webpages – if I go to http://facebook.com – it will actually load up http://m.facebook.com automatically, unless I put www. in front.
There’s a version of Opera for the touch that runs through the Java app. I’m using the free Opera Mini (OM) – doesn’t seem to work all that well – so much so that I’m not going to continue using it. I’m not sure how the full version (paid version) of Opera runs. From what I’ve been able to get OM to do, it will load up the page zoomed out and in full “real” mode, and when you click on an area, it will zoom in to that part of the page. You can then pan around the page. Not quite what Safari can do on the iPhone – but close.
I’m content with using the IE that came with it. I don’t plan on doing a TON of web browsing on there. Mostly Facebook, Canada411 lookups (free… yay… no more 411 charges… BTW bell is $1.50/411 call).
It will be interesting to see how or if Firefox ends up debuting on the Windows Mobile 6 platform. My guess, is that something is in the works.
Perhaps Google is already working on something…

I sync using MissingSync as well on Leopard. The drawback is that apparently the feature of mounting the device as a drive only works in Tiger.
why do you need to sync Outlook at all? In my case I just entered the outlook web access of the work server in the phone, and it will sync to it through the data plan.
I’m guessing your workplace perhaps hasn’t enabled
outlook web access.
try opera mobile, it’s a free trial for 30 days. I can’t decide if it’s better than IE or not.
I sync with outlook at work… so that I don’t have to install MissingSync on my work system…
I’ve given up on Opera Mini… I’ll try Opera Mobile… I’ll let you know what I think of it.
why did you give up Opera Mini? I was thinking of giving it a shot, for the zoom in / zoom out feature, which the Mobile version doesn\’t have. Mobile is cool however because you can scroll pages by dragging the finger on the screen – and unlike the rest of the Touch, it works.
Just to make sure you got what I meant about sync:
If your workplace has outlook web access,
setting it up in the HTC Touch Messaging means there is no need to ever sync the touch manually. It will sync mails, contacts, calendar (optionally), using the phone\’s built-in ActiveSync, through the web, throughout the day.
Because Opera Mini is in Beta, it doesn’t have a signed certificate – so you need to keep hitting YES to the prompts – it ends up locking up on me. Supposedly there are hacks for it, but I’m not going to bother going that far. I haven’t had any problems with anything else on the Touch locking up – so I’m not sure what you mean by “unlike the rest of the Touch, it works.”
As for syncing, you would think that would work… but they’re running Exchange 2000… from what I gather It only works on 2003 or newer… no? I have 3 walls of cinderblock and a concrete ceiling – no phone reception at all in there – so not really an option I guess.
Have you been able to get it to work with Exchange 2k?
my company uses an Exchange 2003 server.
About my comment above, it is about how better grab-and-scroll in Opera for the pocket PC is. In opera, either you drag to select text, or drag to scroll, it’s selectable. In IE, it’s drag to select text, and sometime, if the width of the finger is wider, the HTC software kicks in and goes into scroll mode. This HTC stuff is a hack on top of IE, which wasn’t designed for this.
It’s easy by mistake to go in the mode where it locks-scroll, where you have to click again to make it stop. Basically it’s not confortable and it’s random. The grab-and-scroll in Opera for PPC just does what it says, and it doesn’t matter how you hit the screen
I was using Opera Mini – not the paid version of Opera… maybe that has to do with it… but ya, it would just lock up my phone and I would have to reset it. I even wiped all the data/apps off it and installed it, and it did the same thing… so I know it’s not something that I’ve put on the phone.
